Indian Railways provides the Tatkal scheme, a service for
last-minute train ticket bookings, via the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism
Corporation (IRCTC) website. It is intended for travelers without a reserved
ticket who have last-minute travel needs.
A day before to the planned date of travel, reservations for
a restricted number of seats in all train classes are accepted under the Tatkal
scheme.
The Tatkal system has stricter cancellation policies in
addition to charging a greater fee than the standard booking fare. If a Tatkal
ticket is confirmed, there is no refund unless the train is delayed or
cancelled for more than three hours. The cancellation fees are greater.
In order to purchase a Tatkal ticket, travelers must sign in
to the IRCTC website or app, search for trains that are available, and choose
the Tatkal option. In order to expedite the booking process, passengers should
have all of their information ready, including name, age, proof of ID, and
payment details.
